2D "Mobile" Bar Codes in Japan

In Japan, mobile barcodes are widespread and have emerged as popular way to provide direct access to customers.

Of the 120 million people accessing the internet in Japan, over 69 million do so on their mobile phones. Almost all of the mobile phones in the market now have equipped with a barcode scanner by default. This has led to an explosion in popularity for these barcodes. Some of the most popular usages include:

  • Links to mobile sites tied to product advertising
  • Links to contact info like email and phone numbers
  • Job recruting
  • Online surveys
  • Links to download ring tones and wallpaper
